HOLOMEDICINE AND 5G CONNECTIVITY IN HEALTHCARE
27-28 November 2023
NUHS, Singapore
We are proud to partner with the following organisations for this event:
ABOUT
The Holomedicine® Association (HMA) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), as well as the National University Health System (NUHS) and the Global System for Mobile Communication Association (GSMA) is planning an event to showcase the latest developments, innovations and considerations in the field of extended reality technologies and 5G in healthcare.
This event will aim to attract global tech innovators, experts and administrators in healthcare, and policymakers interested in integrating advanced technologies and new innovations in their healthcare systems.
The event, which will take place in November 2023, will be hosted at the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore over two days. The event will comprise of a number of keynote speeches, panel discussions and demonstrations of the latest technological innovations in extended reality, as well as the significance of 5G technology for the healthcare sector.
Industry will have the chance to showcase their products and explain how they are and can be used to advance healthcare delivery to patients across the medical spectrum.
Objectives
The event will focus on 2 main areas and topics.
The first would be the on 5G technology, and how it can bring benefits to the healthcare sector. Beyond just high speed connectivity, 5G offers services that are not available with other forms of wireless communication. Many industries have embarked on their 5G adoption journey, including Smart Cities/ Smart Estates, Lifestyle, Industry 4.0 Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics, among others. The healthcare sector stands to learn and benefit from much of the experience gained from these industries on their work with 5G.
The event will also aim to showcase the uses and application of holomedicine® technologies in the medical and educational fields. Given the targeted audience being not only clinicians and educators, but policymakers as well, the event also will focus on outlining the aspects needed for the proper functionality of holomedicine® technologies, which have the potential to significantly improve the day-to-day work of healthcare professionals and contribute to enhancing patient outcomes. This includes but is not limited to infrastructure (5G), protection of health data and secure transfer of sensitive data.
Beyond single use cases, mixed reality technology can serve as a technology platform upon which various other capabilities can be built upon, including integrated data networks, edge computing, unified user interfaces, among others.
Through the organisation of the event, we hope to provide an opportunity for participants to learn and experience holomedicine®, 5G technology, and to think about how these innovative platforms could help them enhance healthcare delivery to their patients.
Finally, the event will be a great opportunity for industry to showcase newest technology developments and present the industry perspective on 5G in holomedicine®, demonstrating the advantages quick and stable connectivity has on holomedicine® technologies and subsequent medical outcomes.

Background
In August 2022, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) in Singapore announced a number of 5G projects under its 5G Innovation Programme. The National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore received a grant under this programme to enable the use of realistic 3D holograms for various medical operations, including helping surgeons plan operations (Holomedicine®). 5G is a crucial for this technology to work efficiently and can ensure surgeons and other healthcare professionals have enough connectivity and speed to support existing and future use cases.
NUH runs a world-leading holomedicine® programme, allowing clinicians to plan their surgeries more effectively and also teach students how to use innovative and impactful technologies to produce better healthcare outcomes for patients. The 5G event planned by the Holomedicine® Association and IMDA will aim to show (1) the benefits of mixed reality (MR) platforms and the important role they play in improving healthcare systems, and (2) the importance of having a high speed, low latency network to enable better patient outcomes, high-quality teaching and training, and connecting a worldwide network of healthcare professionals, students and patients.
The Holomedicine® Association
The Holomedicine® Association AISBL, is the first global association for holomedicine®, created to illustrate the innovation in the field of digital health and to help shape the debate around the digital transformation. It consists of individual experts from medicine, science, technology, and policy. We work to build new methods for delivering mixed reality technologies in medicine and surgery, ensuring they have maximum clinical impact.
The foundation of a global association for holomedicine® illustrates the breadth of innovative companies in this field and help shape the debate around the digital transformation of healthcare. It raises awareness of how this still young technology could be used, and it will demonstrate the life-changing impact of holographic-based applications to patients. By working with medical experts and politicians, the Association works to establish an appropriate framework for holographic applications and their integration into the field of digital health. The Association sets high standards in terms of medical quality, patient safety and data protection; and it will ensure medical staff will be equipped with information and training needed for new holographic applications.
Key objectives of the Association:
- Promote the use of holomedicine® to benefit patients
- Set interoperability standards
- Ensure security and data protection
- Adapt and improve patient flows
- Promote skills & training for medical professionals
IMDA
As a statutory board in the Singapore government, IMDA seeks to deepen regulatory capabilities for a converged infocomm media sector, safeguarding the interests of consumers and fostering pro-enterprise regulations.
With more pervasive use of data, IMDA will also continue to promote and regulate data protection in Singapore through the Personal Data Protection Commission, which will be part of the IMDA. This will ensure that public confidence in the private sector’s use of personal data is safeguarded.
IMDA aims to build a competitive and sustainable infocomm media industry, developing Singapore as a nucleus for media content, services and applications, while growing the seed of technological innovation and fostering collaboration between local and multinational corporations in the sectors.
IMDA strives to create an environment for Singapore to develop quality content, exploit opportunities in digital media and move up the value chain. Already, Singapore’s broadcast, film, publishing, animation and interactive media and games have been recognised worldwide for their ground-breaking originality and high quality.
It is also IMDA’s goal to foster an ecosystem where local infocomm companies and startups can work alongside the world’s top MNCs and innovative foreign firms to develop the “next big thing” for the industry.
Over the years, Singapore has laid the foundation for a thriving ecosystem with its infrastructure of high-speed fibre optic network and extensive wireless links. As the regulator of the telecom industry, IMDA continues to promote a competitive market, while encouraging innovation that brings benefits to companies and consumers.
In terms of infocomm manpower, IMDA works with the industry and educational institutions to prepare the current and future workforce for an economy and society enabled by infocomm. This involves grooming globally competitive infocomm professionals, developing infocomm competencies in key economic sectors, and nurturing infocomm talent from schools to join the industry.
NUHS
